He met Jonathan Hare many times over the years and liked the pitches. The partnership declined to invest. NEA later invested in WebShield in 2017.

Scott Sandell preserved the non-hierarchical philosophy while breaking precedent by taking the title of chief executive — unheard of in venture — because sovereign wealth funds as limited partners preferred a counterpart whose title meant something. Venture firms make it deliberately hard to tell who is in charge, because partnerships are not supposed to have bosses. It avoids civil wars.
