Bernie Lacroute was Jonathan Hare's original point of contact into the Kleiner Perkins partnership from 1995 — introduced by Jean-Louis Gassée, the famously flamboyant former head of Apple Engineering — and the two hit it off immediately: shared years programming PDP-8s, PDP-11s and VAX systems, deep familiarity with DEC's RDB database architecture, and an uncompromising devotion to Chateau Margaux, which Hare has always regarded as the finest wine in the world. The KP orbit that followed — Doerr, Byers, Khosla, Caufield, Compton, Hearst, the Sand Hill offices with the Valley's best free lunch buffet — is its own episode.
