“You're like Steve Jobs. You almost got me to invest, and I don't invest in anything.”
Parts of this entry are out of date. It is published anyway, because an incomplete record that invites correction is more useful than no record at all.
A founding named partner of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Stanford GSB in the 1970s — which is how he knew Michael Spence. On the board of AOL, and reachable from an AOL address, which is how Jonathan Hare could reach almost anyone, including John Doerr.
A genuine personal friend, which Hare notes is a rarity on Sand Hill Road. He came to the parties at 3040 Steiner, usually with John Hummer.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
Hare made the reservation at a restaurant behind Davies Symphony Hall and had been there many times. When Caufield arrived the concierge became flustered — wrong table — and Caufield waved it off and got them a better one, because he was there constantly and was an enormous tipper. Hare tipped twenty percent, like a normal person.
He came close to putting in a million dollars personally. His explanation, later:
Everything I ever sold, I'd have made more money holding. And my biggest problem is how to spend all my money before I die — so I really shouldn't be investing in future internet stuff.
And then: you're like Steve Jobs. You almost got me to invest, and I don't invest in anything.
There is no single root. This is one view of the graph, from this node — what you see depends on where you enter and what you are looking for.

Open →the comparisonHP as a teenager, Terman's Valley, an Oregon commune, India, Zen — the parallels the record can actually show; and the borrowed Ferrari, the Z8, and the woman who connects them
Open →This entry is deliberately incomplete. The gaps below are the things only certain people can settle — and settling one is a contribution like any other: recorded, timestamped and attributed to whoever made it.
