AJ Agarwal lost $200,000 in the coup — then saved the company for $40,000 and a BMW Z8

GSB classmate; the coalition backer of 2013, the bridge lender of the COVID crunch, and the advisory seat still waiting to be used

Who this is

AJ Agarwal — Jonathan Hare's Stanford GSB classmate — appears at both ends of the record's hardest decade. In 2013 he put in $200,000 as part of the coalition Hare assembled to reclaim Resilient's board, and lost it in the coup that followed. In December 2021, when NEA's COVID-era pullback left WebShield in an immediate cash crunch, he provided the $40,000 survival loan against the collateral of Hare's European-spec 2000 BMW Z8; $30,000 was repaid in cash, $10,000 converted to convertible debt, and Hare granted him 20,000 WebShield shares and an advisory-board seat with the explicit understanding he'd spend real time understanding the architecture. The record preserves Hare's wry verdict on that engagement: I'm still waiting. But the Z8 was saved. The episode carries it whole.
