The first planned ecological community — and Hare's weekend territory

On the Sonoma coast, begun in the mid-1960s: the first American community planned around ecological principles, with an architectural code requiring buildings to sit within the landscape rather than on it — unpainted timber, wind-shaped rooflines, no lawns, shared meadow held in common.
One of Jonathan Hare's favorite weekend escapes, and the place he sent John Clippinger and Marie Charles on the weekend that began a friendship of twenty years.
Each entry below carries its own provenance — the source, and how it was processed. That is the condition on which this graph can be extended by anyone without degrading.
The trail exists so that people who were there can reconstruct their own memories, recognize what they helped incubate, and add to or correct the record — or forward the few pages that belong to someone they know.
It is a working demonstration of a principle this corpus makes constantly: that constraint written into the substrate produces coherence without requiring anyone to agree.
Nobody at Sea Ranch votes on whether a neighbor's house is appropriate. The code makes an inappropriate house impossible to build, and the result is several hundred structures over sixty years that look like one idea rather than several hundred compromises.
That is the milled edge, applied to a coastline.
