Scott McNealy walked up mid-conversation in the D1 Carlsbad corridor — Jonathan Hare was talking with Meg Whitman about Pierre Omidyar and the Santa Fe Institute — with 'Don't mind my interrupting, I need to say hello to my best customer.' David Marquardt spotted them and joined, closing the circle: at a pivotal 1992 lunch Marquardt had asked Hare who the big winner of his GSB class would be, noting McNealy had been the undisputed big winner of the classes of '79–'80.
