Milton Jonathan Hare told his son he was named for the biblical Jonathan — and that Jonathan was King David's best friend and his lover.

The church accepted the friendship and had no comment on the rest. The text itself is famously ambiguous and has been argued over for centuries.

Why a man tells his son that

It is of a piece with everything else Milton Hare taught. He had left the denomination over its caution on race, married across it, and raised children who were told that the shame attached to ordinary human nature was itself the problem.

Naming your son after a figure the church would rather you read differently, and then telling him why, is a deliberate act of formation. It says: the received version is not the only one, you are permitted to look, and you do not owe anybody embarrassment about what you find.
