Deferred Stanford to command a tank in the Gulf

Admitted to the Stanford GSB class of 1992 while serving as a tank commander in the US Army. He deferred in order to serve in the first Gulf War under George H. W. Bush, in an M1, pushing Iraqi forces out of Kuwait and southern Iraq.
Having done it, he came back and joined the class of 1993 — so the class of 1992 got to know him anyway. He is an honorary member of it, and comes to every reunion, having married a classmate of Jonathan Hare's, Camila.
He later founded a hedge fund, named for the armored cavalry, and is by Hare's reckoning among the most financially successful people in the class, possibly the most.

Hare's assessment is that he is probably the nicest person in the class. He was a Giants season ticket holder and gave Hare seats directly behind home plate on the third base side — during the years the team was genuinely good.
