Jim Clark founded three billion-dollar companies — the third attacked the same plumbing Resilient did

The Geometry Engine, SGI, Netscape, Healtheon: the serial founder whose health-data problem is this record's problem

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Person

Who this is

Silicon Graphics, Netscape and Healtheon founder — the role the film's own credits give, and all this page takes from the public record. In this record for one stated reason: Jim Clark is one of the twenty-two credited narrators of the Silicon Valley Historical Association's Steve Jobs: Visionary Entrepreneur, and Jonathan Hare records having met and having connections to him (S-183). Where, when and through whom are not yet on the record; Hare's earlier account (S-182) is that most of these connections ran through Laurene Powell Jobs. The page is a placeholder that says so, and an invitation to either side to fill it.

The public record, at web grade. A Stanford electrical-engineering professor whose Geometry Engine became Silicon Graphics in 1982; Netscape in 1994 with Marc Andreessen, the company that made the web a mass medium, backed by Kleiner Perkins; Healtheon in 1996, the attempt to wire the paperwork of American healthcare, which merged into WebMD; The New New Thing is his book-length portrait. In this record's network: Healtheon is the important edge — it attacked the same health-data plumbing that Resilient Network Systems later approached with trust rather than pipes, and the funder behind Netscape's rise, John Doerr, is already on this graph in Hare's own Kleiner orbit. Where Healtheon moved the forms, the Trust Network moved the permissions; the comparison is the fastest way to explain the record's health thread to anyone who lived the 1990s version.
