Eileen Gu — Gu Ailing — is, at twenty-two, the most decorated freestyle skier in Winter Olympic history: three golds at Milan 2026 on top of her Beijing 2022 medals. Born in San Francisco, raised by her mother and grandmother, a Stanford student, competing for China since 2019 with the stated aim of inspiring young Chinese women into sport. Her own formulation of the two-cultures position, repeated since she was sixteen: when she is in the US she is American, and when she is in China she is Chinese. She has served as an athlete ambassador for the Salt Lake City Olympic bid — representing, in the same career, both countries most people insist she choose between.

Her grandmother, Guozhen Feng — a senior engineer at China's Ministry of Transport, one of the two women who raised her — died during the Milan Games, and Gu learned of it just after winning her record third gold. She arrived late to the press conference and told the room why, through tears: her grandmother had been a fighter — 'she was a steamship' — a woman who commanded life and made it what she wanted. She had not promised her grandmother a win; she had promised to be brave, as her grandmother had been.
