The Microsoft architect who championed Consilient — then told Microsoft the network had already won

Chief Architect for Visual Basic and later Group Program Manager for Microsoft's Shared Source program — and, in Jonathan Hare's account, a champion of Consilient in the 2000–2001 era, speaking at the O'Reilly P2P conference where Consilient stood on the sponsor bill. His famous February 2003 open retirement letter told Microsoft what Consilient's architecture assumed: 'Useful software written above the level of the single device will command high margins for a long time to come. Stop looking over your shoulder and invent something! ... network protocols have turned out to be a far better fit for this middleman role.' The letter is public record (IDG coverage, February 2003); the championship is Hare's account (S-119), and Stutz is invited to extend or correct it.
