David Brooks, my favorite political commentator — now at The Atlantic

Twenty-two years a New York Times columnist; a staff writer at The Atlantic since February 2026; one link from Laurene Powell Jobs

About this entry

This is Jonathan Hare's account, with its provenance shown. The person or organization named has not yet claimed or corrected it.

Person

Who this is

Jonathan Hare's favorite political commentator, in his own words (S-181), and on this page for that reason and one other: he is a link away from Laurene Powell Jobs, whose magazine he now writes for. Public record, at web grade: a New York Times op-ed columnist from 2003 until January 2026, when The Atlantic announced he was joining it full-time as a staff writer — he had long been a contributing editor there — with a weekly podcast on the moral and institutional underpinnings of decency, supported by Yale, where he became a presidential senior fellow. Before the Times: The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard; a PBS NewsHour commentator since 2001; chair of Weave, the Aspen Institute's social-fabric project. Books include Bobos in Paradise, The Social Animal, The Road to Character, The Second Mountain and How to Know a Person.

What the record would put in front of him is the argument beneath this site — the ancestor argument, the Premiums, the claim that governance can be inherited rather than enforced — which is closer to his subject than to most journalists'. No contact is claimed. The page is an address.

What is missing, and how to fix it

This entry is deliberately incomplete. The gaps below are the things only certain people can settle — and settling one is a contribution like any other: recorded, timestamped and attributed to whoever made it.

If you were there

Correct anything wrong, add what only you know, or claim this entry as your own. Write to evidence@qpncatalyst.io and Jonathan directly (both are on the button) — a timestamped confirmation comes back with your submission attached, as your own independent record. No account, no permission, no institutional standing required.

Public contributions earn Publicity Premium; bringing others who were there earns Cascade Premium. Everything is valued retrospectively as outcomes verify, so nothing has to be priced up front.
