By the way, about David Cheriton, he's the one that introduced me to Andy Bechtolsheim later, or actually not long from them, because I used to hang out with these guys. He was so pissed at the whole industry. He says, 'These guys are a bunch of lying pieces of shit with all this.' Because I liked ATM, Asynchronous Transfer Mode. That was a very elegant protocol. Said, 'Yeah, but it's never going to get adopted, and if they just started routing IP right now, it would work. It's basically a scam of the telecom vendors to maintain their hegemony over the industry.' He was really pissed off about it. And by the way, at the time, he wasn't rich. He had some called Hybrid Networks, which had like, used, fat pipes down and then thin pipes up.
So he's the one that introduced me to Andy Bechtolsheim, who later introduced me to Bill Joy, when he was at Assem Smallworks, because I showed him my plan for Consilient. Showed him my architecture with all the organics, everything we were doing with Consilient, and he hooked me up with Bill, gave me his email address, his personal email address, which was hard to get. And I sent him my pitch deck, and pitch was, it was a PowerPoint deck with maybe some megabytes. So I just, I sent it to him, and I, and then I just got a call from Bill Joy. And Bill Joy says, 'Hey, I see you, you know, I saw you send me a message from Andy Bechtolsheim says we should talk. Let's talk.' I terminated the download because it'd probably take me an hour to download your deck, and let's just talk. So that's how I met Bill Joy.
He was working on JXTA. He did Java. He did, you know, TCP/IP stack. We talked about my grandpa being at ARPANET, by the way. They did the original TCP/IP when he was the deputy chief scientist for the Pentagon, because they had to connect the silos for the Titan II, which my grandfather was in charge of building. So he, my grandfather, was actually over the project that first invented the goddamn internet, and people don't recognize it. Now I'm going to get mad. But Bill knew. Bill Joy knew. Anyways, we became buddies, but that was because of Andy Bechtolsheim, who was the other, those are the two guys that put the first $100,000 checks in Google, because those guys, Larry and Sergey, shopped the PageRank algorithm everywhere. They were trying to get rid of, they asked everybody in Silicon Valley or everybody in Stanford community for a million dollars to take that invention off their hands because they had no idea what it was.
