A Berkeley public school on Ashby Avenue, where Jonathan Hare spent fourth and fifth grade as one of four white children in a class of thirty.
He learned martial arts to look after himself — Aikido only, chosen because it is defensive and because it taught him to fall without injury. He would blow out his cheeks like a baboon when surrounded, an instinctive primate display against rivals. He is careful about the description: nobody was beating him. They were messing with him because he was the minority.
