Aspen 2005 — the Einstein centenary

The account as dictated, preserved verbatim. Everything elsewhere on this site that derives from it is a distillation — and where the two differ, this governs.

Recorded 2026-08-05Dictated in sessionAll sources
Provenance

Dictated by Jonathan Paul Hare in working sessions with Claude (Anthropic) and transcribed in-session. Lightly cleaned for typographic errors and false starts; wording, sequence and emphasis preserved. Not an audio transcript. Where the distilled page differs from the source, the source governs.

As dictated

For 2005, the author attended the 100th Anniversary of the Einstein's 1905 Miracle Year, where Einstein published 4 Nobel-prize worthy papers, including for the Photo-Electric Effect (photons are a quanta of energy — the fundamental insight underlying to the Quantum Mechanics paradigm developed in the 1920s) and for Special Relativity, the precursor to his landmark 1916 General Theory of Relativity. The Author's friend Pam Alexander got him a courtesy pass to the afternoon cocktail party for this invitation only event, attended by hundreds of the most illustrious physicists, assembled to honor the Time Magazine's Man of The Century. Einstein's groundbreaking contributions to Quantum Relativity and General Relativity have been the basis for over 95% of Nobel Prizes in Physics and 90% of Nobel Prizes in Chemistry since Einstein won his only Nobel in 1921. This represented the first two provably verified rungs of the Consilience ladder described by the Author's friend E.O. Wilson.

In 2006, the Author again returned for a summer vacation in Aspen staying with his friend Pam Alexander. Alexander, a long-time patron of the Aspen Institute, gave the author a courtesy all-access pass to all the Institute, first Aspen Ideas Festival, where a chance encounter with Wilson — in the company of Bill Joy — resumed a conversation that had lapsed for five years.

Corrections applied downstream are recorded here rather than made silently. The source above is unaltered.

Editorial record

The 95%/90% figures were reframed on the published page as Hare's own analysis, stated as a finding rather than an unattributed percentage.

Downstream

What was built from this

Each page below is a distillation of the account above. The chain is recorded in both directions so that a reader, a journalist or a future system can walk from a claim back to what was actually said.

Correction

If you were there

A source record can be wrong about the world even when it accurately preserves what was said. Corrections are recorded alongside rather than replacing it — nothing here is overwritten.
